When temperatures drop and the wind picks up, the jacket you choose can make or break your day outside. Two of the most popular options—parkas and puffer jackets—often get lumped together, but they're built for different jobs.
Here's what our team at Zachava has learned about parkas and puffers: what they're made of, how they perform, and which one actually fits your cold-weather needs.
What Is the Difference Between a Parka and a Puffer Jacket?
A parka is a long, heavily insulated jacket built for serious cold. It typically falls at or below the hip—sometimes all the way to the ankle—and almost always has a large hood, often trimmed in faux or real fur to block wind from your face. Parkas are heavier, roomier, and designed to handle extreme conditions.
A puffer jacket is a lighter, quilted jacket filled with insulation (down or synthetic) that's stitched into channels to trap warmth without adding bulk. Puffers come in every length, from cropped to knee-length, with or without a hood, and are built more for versatility than for extremes.
At a glance:

Best for mild to moderately cold weather
Now let's look at each one in more depth.
Parkas
What Is a Parka, Exactly?
A parka is a long-length, heavily insulated coat designed for cold climates and harsh conditions. The defining features are length and coverage: most parkas extend past the hip, and many go past the knee for maximum protection. Longer parkas often include side vents, snaps, or zippers so you can still sit down and move comfortably despite the extra fabric. Because of that longer cut, parkas tend to run roomier through the body, leaving space for heavier insulation underneath.
Is a Parka a Good Cold-Weather Choice?
For genuinely cold climates and seasons, yes—a well-insulated parka is one of the warmest outerwear options you can buy. If you're regularly out in freezing temperatures, wind, or snow, a parka is built to handle it in a way most other jacket styles aren't.
Are There Different Types of Parkas?
Broadly, parkas fall into a few categories:
Technical or expedition parkas—built for extreme cold and snow, usually with waterproof or water-resistant shells and heavy down or synthetic fill.
Lifestyle parkas—styled for everyday city wear, often using wool blends or cotton-nylon fabrics paired with moderate insulation, and cut more like an overcoat.
Puffer-parka hybrids—a newer style that blends the length and hood of a parka with the quilted construction of a puffer, splitting the difference between warmth and weight.
Are Parkas Waterproof?
Most parkas use water-resistant or fully waterproof outer fabrics, which matters for two reasons: staying dry and keeping the insulation dry. This is especially important with natural down, which loses much of its warming ability when wet. Not every parka is built to the same standard, though—how weatherproof a parka is depends on its fabric, construction, and what it's designed for, so it's worth checking the specifics before you buy.
What Are Parkas Made Of?
Durable nylon or polyester blends are the most common shell fabrics, chosen for their wind resistance, water resistance, and breathability. Some parkas blend in cotton for added softness. For insulation, higher-end parkas often use down certified under the Responsible Down Standard (RDS), sometimes combined with recycled synthetic fill for extra durability.
What Makes a Good Parka?
The right parka depends on where and how you'll wear it. If you're spending real time outdoors in harsh, cold conditions, look for a longer, heavily insulated, waterproof parka with a substantial hood. If you want something for city wear in milder cold, a shorter parka in a natural-fiber blend with lighter insulation will likely suit you better and won't leave you overheated indoors.
Why Are Parkas So Popular?
Warmth is the short answer. Add durability, extra coverage, and the ability to layer sweaters or fleece underneath, and you get a jacket that performs equally well on a snowy commute or a genuinely cold day outdoors, whatever the calendar says.
Puffer Jackets
What Are the Different Types of Puffers?
Puffers come in far more variety than parkas. You'll find cropped, mid-length, and long puffers; hooded and hood-free; zip-front, snap-front, and pullover styles; solid and printed; lightweight to heavyweight fill; and countless quilting patterns. A full-zip puffer with a hood can double as a midlayer under a waterproof shell, while lighter puffers are often worn on their own through the shoulder seasons and milder cold-weather stretches.
What Are Puffer Jackets Made Of?
Puffers are typically constructed from polyester or nylon—lightweight, durable fabrics that resist water, wind, and "down-proofing" (keeping insulation from poking through the shell). Many use performance insulation and reflective linings designed to boost warmth without adding weight.
Are Puffer Jackets Waterproof?
It depends on the jacket. Puffers range from fully waterproof to simply water-resistant to offering no water resistance at all. Most cold-weather puffers with a quilted, technical build include at least some level of water and wind resistance as part of the fabric itself.
Puffer Jacket vs. Down Jacket — What's the Difference?
"Puffer jacket" is the broad term for any quilted, insulated jacket, regardless of fill type. "Down jacket" refers specifically to puffers filled with natural down from geese or ducks. Every down jacket is a puffer, but not every puffer is a down jacket.
Natural Down vs. Synthetic Down
Natural down is prized for being extremely lightweight, compressible, and warm, with a long lifespan—but it loses much of its insulating power when wet. Synthetic down is engineered to mimic that same air-trapping warmth using polyester fibers, and while it's slightly heavier and less compressible than natural down, it holds up far better in wet conditions and dries faster.
What Makes a Good Puffer Jacket?
Start with how and where you'll wear it. Planning for extreme cold calls for a heavier natural down fill. Milder, wetter climates favor synthetic insulation. Quilting pattern matters too—smaller baffles distribute fill more evenly for a lighter feel, while larger baffles trap more air and add warmth at the cost of some bulk.
Why Are Puffer Jackets So Popular?
Versatility. A good puffer moves easily across seasons, works as a standalone jacket or a layering piece, and delivers a lot of warmth for very little weight—all while looking effortlessly put-together.
Parka or Puffer: Which One Should You Choose?
Which is warmer? Traditionally, parkas win on raw warmth and durability against harsh elements. Modern puffers have closed the gap significantly, though, and now offer serious warmth without the bulk.
Which is more breathable? Puffers, generally—their lighter weight and (often) synthetic fill let heat and moisture escape more easily. Many parkas offset their heavier build with pit zips or other ventilation.
Which is more waterproof? Both styles offer water resistance, but how much depends on the specific jacket. Puffers built from nylon or polyester usually include durable water-repellent coatings. Technical parkas designed for snow are typically fully waterproof, while city-style parkas may lean more toward water resistance than full waterproofing.
Which is better for winter? It comes down to your climate and activity level. Parkas suit people facing extreme winter cold with lower activity levels—standing around, commuting, and shoveling snow. Puffers suit more active pursuits—hiking, walking, errands—in cold but not extreme conditions. Plenty of people end up owning both and reaching for whichever the day calls for.

We'll be honest with you—that's always been our way.
The new U.S. import tariffs have made it more expensive for us to bring certain goods into the United States. We've absorbed what we could. But on some items, a modest price adjustment was unavoidable. We don't believe in hiding that kind of thing behind vague language or sudden, unexplained markups.
What we do believe in is fairness.
If you're shopping from outside the United States—whether you're in London or Lagos, Paris or Perth, Dubai or Durban, São Paulo or Seoul—the American tariff situation simply isn't your problem. You shouldn't pay more because of it.
So you won't.
Effective immediately, Zachava is offering a 10% to 15% price reduction, depending on your region, on all orders shipping to addresses outside the United States. If your delivery address isn't in the U.S., you will receive a 10% to 15% discount on orders shipping to Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, Oceania, Canada, the Caribbean, and Latin America.
Here's precisely how it works:
Prices adjust automatically. If you're browsing from outside the U.S., the reduction is applied to what you see on the site—no code, no extra steps. The price you see is already your price.
It's your shipping address that determines the discount at checkout. Physically in the U.S. but shipping a gift overseas? You get the discount. Shopping internationally but sending your order to a U.S. address? Standard U.S. pricing applies, including tariffs. It's simple: wherever the package is going, that's what determines your rate.
Every other discount still applies on top. Sale prices, promotional offers, and welcome discounts—they all stack. The 10% to 15% international reduction is a blanket reduction, not a replacement for any other discounts you've earned.
And this isn't a flash sale. These reductions will remain in place for as long as the tariffs are in place.
Zachava carries over 200 luxury brands—Dior, Prada, Givenchy, Creed, Chanel, Saint Laurent, and hundreds more—at prices that are already well below what you'd find at traditional retail. This discount makes that value even sharper.
To our international community, to our neighbors in Canada, thank you for shopping with us. You've always been a meaningful part of what we're building here. This is our way of saying we see you, we appreciate you, and we won't let stupid U.S. trade policies become your burden.
